Welcome to my report on the trip to France.
First, I must report that my flights to Paris were pretty uneventful. I was sure hoping I could report that to you. And I can. All luggage was received and passed through security. At Philadelphia I was through the security and ready after about 45 minutes. I overheard others who came later describe long lines. I think it pays to be early.
We left Philadelphia at about 7:20pm, 15 minutes late. I set my watch 5 hours ahead to match London time and to trick myself into a new time period. I settled in to do some reading and just rested. I slept for 2 or 3 hours which was pleasant but I woke to a new dawn already. That is the tricks of the clocks and changing time zones. So, I was into a new day about 5 hours early. We were fed well.
We arrived at Heathrow and needed to go through security again. I was a little concerned at this point because the line was long and the time was short. However, I got through okay though I moved directly to the plane. We were held up, I suppose, waiting for those behind us. The flight to Paris was only about 40 minutes so it went quickly.
Another long line was waiting at Paris to clear customs. I patiently waited (Yes, I was patient) and passed through. The agent looked at my passport, stamped it and waved me on. I expected even a question or two. The last time I flew (from Indianapolis to Philadelphia) I was pulled out of line and searched. I figured that I somehow had a terrorist profile. After I cleared customs, I found my baggage as it came out. I headed out of the area and spotted the friendly face of Jerry Moyer who was there to greet me. We headed for their home after taking several detours because of congested Paris traffic.
We enjoyed a great lunch prepared by Carolyn followed by sitting and talking. They were hungry for news from Wallingford and were asking about people. I was anxious to learn about what they have been doing.
We headed out for an afternoon activity guaranteed to keep me
awake. We visited Versailles which was breathtaking for an easily
impressed guy like me. The magnificence of the buildings and the architecture
are nearly beyond description. The beauty of such human creations is testimony
to the image of God which gives human beings artistic ability. The sad story is
how the decadence and desire of the leaders, who created such magnificence, led
to collapse and downfall of that government leading to the sad history of
France’s later events.
Tonight, Jerry had to attend a meeting of an association of evangelical churches for which he serves as leader. Carolyn, Peter, Samuel and I had supper together. They gave me a tour of their beautiful house which serves them well and gives them opportunity to serve the Lord through their hospitality as well as providing a meeting place for their church.
If all goes well, when I finish, I will head for a warm shower and wash off the traveling grit that has accumulated. I will then head for a comfortable looking bed in a very cozy room which the Moyers are providing. I think some significant sleeping will follow.
More tomorrow.
